Since 1983 Northfield Community LDC has helped thousands of Staten Island residents make their homes and apartments safer and more energy efficient through our New York State Sponsored Weatherization Assistance Program.

Home energy efficiency prevents wasted energy and wasted dollars—less leakage of warm air and entry of cold air leads to lower fuel and utility costs.

Increased energy efficiency means homeowners and tenants are able to maintain comfort without
compromising health and safety.

Northfield’s weatherization program is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy through the New York State government with supplemental funding from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and private monies.

What services does weatherization provide?

Northfield Community LDC’s Weatherization Assistance Program offers a broad range of services to Staten Island Residents.   Our staff conduct energy audits and compile data on energy use in single family homes and multi-family buildings.

Our Weatherization department can:
  • Detect and correct dangerous levels of carbon monoxide
  • Upgrade or replace heating and distribution systems
  • Insulate roofs and walls
  • Seal open by-passes and chasers
  • Conserve domestic water use
  • Repair or replace non-energy efficient windows and doors
  • Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors

What are the benefits of weatherization?

Weatherization creates both immediate and long term financial and safety benefits, including:
  • Ensuring healthy, safe, and comfortable dwellings
  • Retaining affordable housing for senior citizens and eligible families
  • Promoting energy efficiency and associated cost savings
  • Developing new building improvement methods
  • Improving housing stock
  • Stimulating economic development and employment

NORTHFIELD COMMUNITY LDC OF STATEN ISLAND HAS BEEN AWARDED $392,375 NEW YORK MAIN STREET (NYMS) GRANT

Funded by the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation, the NY Main Street Program aims to provide 50% matching eligible reimbursement funds to participating property owners for façade restorations and building renovation projects within the Main Street Program target areas on Port Richmond Avenue.

Joan Catalano, Executive Director, is enthusiastic about the benefits of encouraging investment in the community.  She explains, “We are happy to bring this resource to Port Richmond. These funds will encourage much needed investment in deteriorated buildings along Port Richmond Avenue and will provide affordable housing units as well.” This program aims to help revitalize buildings and create or restore affordable residential units above the retail spaces. We are seeking buildings that have experienced sustained physical deterioration, decay, neglect, or disinvestment and have a number of substandard or vacant residential or commercial units. The properties need to be located in a concentrated area of Port Richmond Avenue from Ann Street to Harrison Avenue. Deadline to apply for this grant is July 15, 2016. For an application and more information on the program, please contact Kathleen Sforza, Economic and Community Development Coordinator at Northfield Community LDC at 718-442-7351 ext 225 or email her at northfieldldc.kathleensforza@gmail.com.

Please visit, www.northfieldldc.org, for full program guidelines and eligibility criteria. The program is funded by the NYS Housing Trust Fund Corporation, administered by the NYS Homes and Community Renewal, and the Office of Community Renewal.

Northfield Community LDC’s offices are located at 160 Heberton Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10302.
